Outdoor Play 

 

There are a great many large parks and outdoor activities in the St Albans area, we've tried to name the key areas but if we've missed any that you feel are worth a mention please let us know so other tots can benefit.

Verulamium Park - St Albans

Verulamium is a beautiful park situated in the heart of St Albans, just a short walk from the town centre and down past the Abbey. Parking is available by Westminster Lodge (Holywell Hill) or by the Museum at St Michaels. There are wonderful lakes with ducks, geese, swans and the odd heron, a lovely place to indulge in the childhood pastime of feeding the ducks! Bird feed is available from 'The Inn on the Park' for 25p a packet.
In addition to the lakes there is a childrens playground and toddlers splashpark, the latter is open during the summer months between May and September 10:00 - 6pm.

 

 

Stanborough Lakes - Welwyn Garden City
Stanborough lakes is an area of outstanding natural beauty consisting of about 126 acres of parkland, nature reserve, boating lake, children's play area and more. A fantastic place to take children, there is also a restaurant and cafe on site for that  much needed coffee and ice cream. 

 

Clarence Park - St Albans

Situated between Hatfield Road and Clarence Road just a short a stroll from the train station. The park contains a wonderful children's play area with climbing equipment for all ages and a popular large sandpit with wooden climbing frame. There is also a swing and access to the roundabout for disabled children. In the corner of the park is an Italian Restaurant where you can sit outside and eat, have a coffee or buy and ice cream.

 

Fleetville Play Area - St Albans

A childrens play area on Hatfield Road in the Fleetville area opposite Morrisons, there are two separate play areas to account for different ages. There is also a small cafe onsite in what were the old public loos!

 

Bernards Heath - St Albans

Childrens play area situated on Sandridge Road in St Albans. Surrounded by grassy areas great for a picnic or game of football.


 

No Mans Land - Wheathampstead

Large open space with wooded areas, there are public loos next to the cricket pitch. On the opposite side of the road is the Wicked Lady pub and restaurant.

 

Dunstable Downs

Vast open space with views over the Chilterns, great for letting youngsters run off steam. Now has a new vistiors centre with the all important cafe, toilets and baby changing facilities.
 

 

Aldenham Country Park - Elstree

The Park and Farm is open every day of the year with the exception of Christmas Eve,Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It includes the following attractions:
175 acres of woodland
Meadows and reservoir
Rare breeds farm including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, shire horses, poultry and rabbits
Childrens adventure and toddlers play areas
"100 Aker Wood" is a recreation of all the features found in the stories of Winnie the Pooh but very much in keeping with a countryside site
Refreshments available via a Kiosk selling hot and cold drinks, cakes, ice creams, etc. - every weekend and daily from Easter until the end of October 10.30am to closing time
During the summer months there is a charge of £5 at the weekend, bank and school holidays and £4 weekdays for car parking, from November this goes down to £ 4 and £2.
 

 

Cassiobury Park - Watford

There are two play areas in the park and a minature railway that is open all year round. A popular feature during the summer months is the bouncy castle. But the main attratction must be the outdoor  paddling pool complex comprising of three pools for under 14's. The area is enclosed and has toilets and refreshments and is open from Easter to mid September.
 

 

Woodland Trust Gruffalo Trail

Located in the ancient Langley Woods in part of Heartwood Forest is the Gruffalo inspired Woodland Nature Trail. Take a look at the website and print off your spotting guide.

 

Stockwood Discovery Centre

Fantastic place for kids & adults just the other side of Harpenden so within eay reach and it's completely Free!. Wonderful outdoor play area for kids of all ages, and beautiful gardens to explore. Large indoor areas of the museum as well fantastic if the weather is changeable. Also has baby changing and a restaurant/cafe onsite.
